My Visit to the Writing Center
On Thursday December 8th, I met with Emma Scott Singletary to help me with my LOTF paper. I only met with her for twenty five minutes, but I in those twenty five minutes she helped me a ton! She helped me with my introduction and conclusion. She was great at finding a different way to word sentences that I didn't work. She also helped me with repetition and my thesis.
Emma Scott made me read my paper out loud which helped with my sentence fluency. It also helped me find any errors such as punctuation or misspelled words. She also helped me with any quotation errors. Emma Scott helped me make sure my quotations also went with my thesis. I think the writing center is a very helpful place and my writing fellow was great.

Sarah: How have your priorities changed from middle school to high school?
My priorities have changed a lot from middle school to high school. I used to get a good night of sleep every night but now I get no sleep. I am also way more busy then I used to be. I dance everyday and I also have to get all of my school work done. In middle school, I would have always given myself a day to rest.
In high school, I also try to hang out with my friends more often. In middle school I would never want to stay home on the weekends but now that is all I want to do. I never want to leave home because I want to be in m bed and catch up on sleep. In middle school I used to never use my time wisely but now I am good at time management and making sure I get things done.

Free Post: West Coast Dance Explosion
This past weekend I went West Coast Dance Explosion which is a dance competition. This was our first competition of the season and my team and I were very excited to kick off the season in Mobile, Alabama. When I arrived Friday night, I went to the convention center to watch some of my team mates compete their solos. A lot of my friends won and they did exceptionally well!
The next day I woke up at 6:20am to get ready for my first round of dance classes. On Saturday I had mostly contemporary and ballet that day and I was pumped. My two favorite classes were Will and Marissa's because they did combos to music that I knew. Will did a combo to Mumford and Sons and Marissa did a combo to Flume. That night we competed and I honestly forgot how much I loved to perform. I even forgot one of my costumes but it was ok because we fixed it and honestly it made the dance look better. Next weekend is Tremaine and I can not wait!

Literary Analysis Process
My literary analysis process has been easy and hard in different ways. As of now I think I have too many quotes so I don't know which ones I should delete. I also need to rewrite some of my looking closelys because it doesn't relate to my thesis. One thing that was actually easy for me was coming up with a thesis statement. Another thing that is also easy for me is finding quotes to go with my thesis statement.
One thing that is really hard for me is writing quotations the right way. I am always scared that I am writing it the wrong way. I recommend to my peers that they make sure that they write their quotes right. I also recommend to have someone else read over it before you turn it in. I did that because it is hard to find your own mistakes in your own paper.

Symbolism
Lila came home after school like it was any other day. She said hello to her father and then went to the kitchen to grab a snack. Lila grabbed a granola bar and headed upstairs to start her homework. When finally got to her room, she passed by her mirror and stopped. She looked at the necklace then touched it reminding her of her mother. The necklace was a heart shaped locket with a picture inside of her and her mother together. The necklace was the only thing she had left of her.
Lila finished her homework, took a shower, and started getting ready for bed. She started brushing her teeth when she looked down to find that her locket was gone. Lila started to panic and called her dad upstairs. Her dad helped her look but could not find it anywhere. She started to cry learning that she would never find her necklace again. Her father told her that her mother was always in her heart and would never leave just because of losing a necklace. This taught Lila that it was time to move on.

How to Stay Close to your Sibling when they leave for College
It is always hard when someone very close to you to leaves you. It also hard to stay in touch when you are both busy doing things in your lives. I try to always text my sister every week to see how she is doing or what she is doing that week. She also tries to text me at least once a week. We usually text everyday though but whatever works for you.
The next thing my sister and I do is skype. This is better then text because it is close to as face to face contact you can get. I also try to skype my sister at least once a week. It also helps if you try to visit your sibling while they are in college. This is very fun for the both of you because you get to hang out but your sibling can show you around.

LOTF Critical Scene: Simon Encounters the Lord of the Flies
Page 143-144 Simon Encounter the Lord of the Flies
"You'd better run off and play with the others. They think your'e batty. You don't want them to think your'e batty do you? You like Ralph a lot don't you? And Piggy, and Jack?" -- "There isn't anyone here to help you. Only me. And I'm the beast."
This scene is critical to understand because it is one when we first learn about the title of the book and when Simon encounter the lord of the flies. It is also important to understand that Simon is really just talking to a pig head on a stick. Simon think the pig is talking back to him but really its just his fear getting in the way of actually seeing what's in front of him. It is like what we talked in class about how Piggy's glasses is significant because it shows how everyone is seeing the island hazy. Piggy's glasses also show that the boys can't see anything clearly.
The pig head represents a demon. Simon represents a God like figure. It is like when Jesus encounters the Devil for the first time. It is important for everyone to know that the lord of the flies tells Simon to not tell everyone that the beast isn't real. Simon, like Jesus would do, puts others first before himself and tries to tell the group. Simon dies for this just like when Jesus died on the cross for everyone's sins.

#thankful
It's almost Thanksgiving and I can not wait for the break starting next Friday! Thanksgiving is one of my favorite times of the year. There isn't any school and I don't have dance so I will actually get to rest which never happens. My sister is coming home for the break and I can not wait to spend time with her. I am so thankful that I have this time to come together with my family and friends and just be together.
I am thankful for many things in my life but the thing that I am probably most thankful for is my family. I am thankful for them because I know they will always be there for me no matter what. I am also thankful for being able to go to such a great school. I am thankful for my friends who never fail to make me laugh and smile. I am also thankful for my parents and the endless sacrifices they make for me.

Create your own Prompt
Write about a time where you didn't want do sometime or go somewhere because you had a negative outlook on it but turns out it gave you some perspective or changed your life in some way.
This past summer I was signed up to go to Camp Ozark for my seventh year in a row. I was not looking forward to it because I was missing two weeks of a dance intensive that I wanted to be apart of. I had already been dancing the whole summer and by this time I didn't want to leave. I even cried when I left the studio because I didn't want to miss out. I put so much pressure on myself, telling myself that I needed to stay and that camp didn't matter anymore. I knew I loved camp I just wasn't feeling it that year at all.
Once I arrived at camp my mood changed and I was glad I was there. This past year was when everything at camp just clicked. I had an amazing cabin, had great counselors, and I found God. When camp was over, I cried because I didn't want to leave. When I was leaving camp, I found it ironic that I didn't want to leave because I loved it so much. Of course though, I can't go this year for dance and I am so mad about it. This experience has shown me to never take things for granite because they can easily being taken away in a blink of an eye.
LOTF Response 11/7
[Piggy:] "I don't agree with all Jack said, but with some. 'Course there isn't a beast in the forest. How could there be? What would a beast eat?"
"Pig."
"We eat pig."
"Piggy!"
"I got the conch!" said Piggy indignantly. "Ralph--they ought to shut up, oughtn't they? You shut up, you littluns! What I mean is that I don't agree about this here fear. Of course there isn't nothing to be afraid of in the forest. Why--I been there myself! You'll be talking about ghosts and such things next. We know what goes on and if there's something wrong, there's someone to put it right."
He took off his glasses and blinked at them. The sun had gone as if the light had been turned off. [...]
"Life," said Piggy expansively, "is scientific, that's what it is. In a year or two when the war's over they'll be traveling to Mars and back. I know there isn't no beast--not with claws and all that, I mean--but I know there isn't no fear either."
Piggy paused.
"Unless--"
Ralph moved restlessly.
"Unless what?"
"Unless we get frightened of people." (83-84)
This sections shows that the beast is actually the boys themselves. "Unless we get frightened of people." is saying that Ralph and Piggy are scared of Jack. Jack is turning into a savage and is loosing his humanity which means he is the one that they are afraid of. We also get as readers, what is going on in the outside world and how the war will over soon and they will be back home. The fear they are feeling is their imagination.
"We eat pig." is foreshadowing that either Piggy might die or will be hurt soon. Piggy says that there isn't anything to be afraid of in the forest which is a lie because he is just trying to comfort himself. Jack's tribe hunts in the forest, the fire happened in the forest, and the "beast" has been in the forest, these are just some examples of why the boys are actually afraid of the forest. Piggy also says that he has the conch which mean there is still some order before everything goes wrong in chapter 8 and onward. The weather changes and sun goes down which indicates a change mood giving us a creepy setting.

Reading Response to Lord of the Flies 10/24
The Lord of the Flies is a book that is different from something I had ever read before. It is third person omniscient which I don't like that much. It also has underlying themes in it which is cool. I wonder why the author made it third person and didn't make it from Ralph's point of view. One thing that surprised was when the little boy died in the fire because the boys weren't paying attention. Another thing that surprised me was how calm all the boys are acting because if I was in that situation, I would panicking.
As I was reading I noticed how the boys are handling the situation of having no adults. They are trying to build structure but are struggling. All they do is fight which I understand but then again I don't because they just need order. I wonder if the boys will every be rescued. I also noticed that most of the boys just don't care and haven't came to the realization that they are all alone on this island. They need to wake up and start learning to survive.

LOTF Human Nature
I believe that we as humans are flawed but also full of possibility. I believe that humans make a ton of mistakes but their is also good in us. I believe that all humans are loving and are cable of love. I think that in our society everyone just sees the bad of whats going on in the world and in our daily lives. What we really need to focus on is the goods because there are so many good things that happen in just a regular day. I feel like every human struggles with seeing the good in life.
My parents, my friends, and my beliefs have made me think this way. My parents have always taught me to have a positive outlook on life and to see things in different ways. I treat my friends well and they treat me well back in return. I was always taught treat others as you would want to be treated. I have also been taught that we all make mistakes but the most important thing is to learn from our mistakes.

Fall Break
During my fall break I went to visit my sister and family in Oklahoma. I visited Oklahoma University and it is beautiful. I love the campus and the weather how it gets cold. I got to see the dance program there and it was nothing I had ever seen in real life. I didn't realize how great the dance program is at OU. I got also got to the costume shop where they make all the costumes for the plays and the ballets. It is the second oldest costume shop in the United States!
I am so thankful that I also got to hang out with my family on my fall break. I got to see my little cousin Levi, my aunt, my uncle, and my other cousin. My little cousin Levi is two years old and is the cutest baby ever. I also got to go shopping and I bought new clothes. This fall break was great and I'm ready to come back to school and work hard!

Reading Response to Scarlet
I am reading Scarlet by Marissa Myer and I am half way done with it. One thing I have noticed about Scarlet is how it ties in with Cinder. It does switch between the two characters, Cinder and Scarlet but I know they will meet up soon. As I was reading, I could tell they would meet up because Cinder says she will go to Paris and that is where Scarlet is. I like how all the books in this series will connect like this.
I wonder why the author made it to so that the characters would connect like this. Scarlet and Cinder are very different characters not only physical but also how they act emotionally. One thing that surprised me was when Scarlet defended her grandmother so quickly, you can tell she really cares about her. What I like most about this series is that the books are based off of fairy tales. Cinder is based off of Cinderella and Scarlet is based off of Little Red Riding Hood.

Procrastination 10/10
Procrastination: Is Your Future Self Getting a Bad Deal? by Timothy A Pychyl Ph. D explains why humans procrastinate and how it is affecting us. I attempt to overcome procrastination by telling myself that I can do whatever I want after I finish the task that I need to do that day. I just tell myself I just have to get through it. I procrastinate in a lot of different ways from having to do my homework or getting up in the morning, I procrastinate. What helps me not to procrastinate for school is to make a schedule of time to do my homework and breaks.
I blame my procrastination for being so stressed all the time. In my head I'm telling myself "You have so many things to do why not just sleep instead!" which is a horrible idea. I usually do overcome my procrastination sometimes, for example, for school when I know I need to do well to make a good grade. I agree with the author that we have a lack of special concern for future selves because we are worrying about others. I try to always make sure others are well before I start to take care of myself. I now know that I need to put myself first sometimes so I do not procrastinate.

Music 3/10
Music is a great thing and I am very thankful for it. I love music because everyone interprets it differently. I also love music because there are so many different types of music. It also is fun when you find someone that likes the same band or artist as you. Also if you love music then it will probably lead you to go to a concert which are so much fun.
Concerts are such a freeing thing to do. Its a break from normal life to see a band/artist perform for 1-2 hours to just let go. When I'm at a concert I'm just singing along and dancing and having a blast with my friends. I also so dance which has made me appreciate music even more. When you dance you can go with the music or against and be as creative as you want.
Reading Response Cinder 10/3
I started Cinder by Marissa Meyer a couple days ago and I finished it in class Friday. It has been a while since I have been able to find a book that interests me that much which makes me happy. I think the reason I loved it so much was because the way the author writes. The way she writes is flows to page to page and makes you want to not stop reading. As I was reading I noticed that this book is based off the fairytale Cinderella which is very cool because it is similar yet different.
One thing I noticed while I was reading Cinder was that the author wrote in sections. She wrote in four sections calling each part book 1, book 2, book 3, and book 4. I wonder why she called it book when it was just a section? She also put a quote at each section that would have to do with what would happen next. I did like that she did that though because it felt like you were ending a bigger chapter of the book.

Cruise with Harley and Mose
The two best friends, Harley and Mose, were looked out onto
the horizon admiring the beautiful blue ocean water from their balcony on the
ship. They were excited, it was their first cruise. They left the balcony and
decided to go get soft serve ice cream because it was hot outside. As they were
eating their soft serve ice cream they heard little kids screaming saying they
could see dolphins from the ship. Harley and Mose proceeded to check it out for
themselves and saw the dolphins swimming into the horizon. Harley and Mose
decided to jump into the water to swim with the dolphins. They rode into the
horizon with only a peace back to their parents. They soon became one with the
animals, leaving their human life behind, the end.
Harrison Bergeron
Harrison Bergeron is probably the most oddest but interesting short stories I have ever read yet. As I was reading I was questioning how would this even work? The thing that kept me reading it was questioning what is this world, I want to know more about it. It is very dystopian yet I can't picture this happening in real life unlike other dystopian novels I've read. I also could not stop thinking about how everyone had to be equal which I thought was extremely unfair to everyone.
Everyone should be able to live their life without restraints. The fact that "smart" people had to have ear pieces and glasses that made their vision blurry. Also hazel was envious of her husband because he had restraints. The fact that she is jealous is just mess up. This just shows that no matter how much you try to make everyone equal, there is just no win to this type of situation.

Dear 13 year old
Dear 13 year old, stop trying to be something you're not, it's pointless. Believe me, you will find people who like you for you. Wear what you want to wear. Do something you love whether it's a sport or an art or reading even if people don't understand how you could miss a big party to go play in a soccer game. Middle School isn't everything and the transition into high school might seem scary but honestly it's nothing. Don't cancel plans with your friends for your "boyfriend or girlfriend" because they are way better then your one week relationship.
Spend time with your family. Care about your grades but don't be obsessed if you make one bad grade, it will be ok. Stay home for one night on the weekends, trust me, you will be well rested for school this way. Being nice to everyone doesn't mean you have to be friends with them just being nice is a great thing. It's better to have a couple true friends then have a bunch of fake friends.
The White Rose 9/19
As I continue to read The White Rose it gets more intense page by page. The author always has suspense by leaving out some details for the reader to find out later. I also thought that the way the author is starting to tie everything together is cool because some things didn't make sense at first but now they do. Something that surprised me was when I found out that the black key was a society and how the author made it a secret that is leading to a rebellion was clever. Another thing that surprised me was when the author decided to save a character who I thought wasn't that worthy to be apart of this rebellion but is actually very necessary.
I wonder why the author only has the point of view from Violet, the main character. It would be cool to see the story from other point of views. I also wonder why the author hasn't mentioned the main character's family that much in the second book. I think something bad has happened to them or something is about to happen to them. I also think something might happen to Violet's sister because the author hasn't talked about her much.

Hurricane Katrina
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/09/books/review/09oshi.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FHurricane%20Katrina&action=click&contentCollection=timestopics®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=search&contentPlacement=8&pgtype=collection
Hurricane Katrina was a devastating tragedy that occurred on August 29, 2005. This natural disaster is something that no one will ever forget. Some people fled New Orleans to find refuge with family but some people stayed either because they thought Katrina was a joke or they didn't have enough money to leave. No one really knew how to react to this situation, not even the government or police. Everyone that could've helped fled and the remainder of the people were stuck with no help. The storm went over the levees leaving 80% of New Orleans under water.
The devastation of New Orleans was unbearable. People stole from houses, grocery stores, and name brand stores like nike. It was like there was no law. The government basically abandoned the remaining survivors so the city was in chaos. There was some heroic acts in the tragic time, for example, the "cajun navy", just volunteered with boats and saved up to 4,000 lives. New Orleans is still recovering till this day.

The White Rose Reading Response 9/12
The White Rose is the second book in The Jewel series. Violet, Ash, and Raven have escaped to the farm and are now working on a revolution to destroy the jewel. The author always keeps on our toes by writing with suspense. She does this by being descriptive on how the characters are running away from something or waiting. By doing this, the author always has us reading till the next page.
Since The White Rose is a dystopian novel, there is lots of world building included in the dialogue. This helps us as readers picture the vivid description in our heads. The author describes the jewel as a fancy place where the richest people live unlike the marsh where the poorest people are from who have barely anything. The author is slowly creating a map in our heads of showing us where the characters are and where they are going. It also helps us remember who lives in those places and where danger lurks.

Getting ready for Twenty Pilots with Hudson
"Hey Hudson turn this song up it's bomb!' I say as she turns up Lane Boy by Twenty One Pilots. "Hurry up we have to get ready for the Twenty One Pilots concert!" says Hudson while I start putting on my makeup. "I'm so excited but stressed but excited!" I say as I dance around the room. "If Tyler doesn't play forest I'm peacing out." "LOL me!"- I respond back to Hudson. "Should I wear overalls or that leather skirt?' I say looking in the mirror with a confused face. "Wear whatever you want." Hudson says causing me more stress. "If I wear the overalls I will look like a farmer so I'm going to go with the leather skirt." "Girls come on we have to go!" Mrs. Heather says making us realizing that we are actually seeing to Twenty One Pilots causing us to get excited. "Ok we are coming" we say in sync as we walk out the door ready to see one of our favorite bands live for the first time.
The White Rose Response
The White Rose is the second book of The Jewel series. It is very intense and always has you on your feet. Violet just escaped the jewel which is very stressful. This book just makes me stressed in general but in a good way. Something that surprised me was that Ash, Violet's lover, was alive. I can't believe that he survived the hits from the regiments.
I wonder why the author made Violet save her best friend because her best friend is very messed up now from all of the physcological damage from her Head of House Lady. She is just holding everyone back while everyone is trying to escape. As I was reading I saw that the author made the choice of making it even harder to get to the farm for suspense. The author did it so the book would be longer which I'm not complaining.

Me, Myself, and I
My name is Mary Francis and I am 15 years old. I have two dogs and their names are Sassy and Coco. I have an older sister named Melissa who is 19 and is in college. I love music and concerts. I went to 3 concerts this summer and they rocked! I saw Panic! at the Disco, Halsey, and Twenty One Pilots. I also love a good meme.
I am a dancer. I started dancing when I was 3. I dance almost everyday of the week. I dance 15 hours a week sometimes more it just depends. I dance at Machita Dance Company. Dance is my life.

The Crown by Kiera Cass
This summer I read The Crown from the selection series by Kiera Cass. The Crown reminds me of a reality tv show but princess style. The crown is about America Singer's daughter, Eadlyn, having her own selection. One thing that I loved about The Crown was how you didn't know who Eadlyn was going to choose until the very end, it was a bunch of guessing. As I was reading, I kept narrowing down who she could choose to be her husband but than at the very end she picks Henri's translator, Erik, which was so unexpected.
Eadlyn is a very indecisive character which I can relate too. I find confusing though that she didn't just tell her father when Marid was blackmailing her because he wanted the crown. It would have been so simple if she did something about it but then their wouldn't be any suspense so I guess I understand. When she finally chose Erik everyone was happy and the kingdom loved her so she really had nothing to worry about. I relate to that because I worry about everything but everything works itself out in the end.
