Hurricane Katrina was a devastating tragedy that occurred on August 29, 2005. This natural disaster is something that no one will ever forget. Some people fled New Orleans to find refuge with family but some people stayed either because they thought Katrina was a joke or they didn't have enough money to leave. No one really knew how to react to this situation, not even the government or police. Everyone that could've helped fled and the remainder of the people were stuck with no help. The storm went over the levees leaving 80% of New Orleans under water.
The devastation of New Orleans was unbearable. People stole from houses, grocery stores, and name brand stores like nike. It was like there was no law. The government basically abandoned the remaining survivors so the city was in chaos. There was some heroic acts in the tragic time, for example, the "cajun navy", just volunteered with boats and saved up to 4,000 lives. New Orleans is still recovering till this day.
This was a devastating hurricane. I remember my grandparents had to come and stay with us because they lived in New Orleans. Luckily, their house didn't flood. I also think that people didn't know that Hurricane Katrina was going to be that bad.
ReplyDeleteThis was a very sad event. My family was luckily not effected and I don't remember much about it. It is crazy how many people did get effected.
ReplyDeleteAfter experiencing the floods in Baton Rouge I understand more how terrible this event was. I didn't know the "Cajun navy" that did rescuing in Baton Rouge also did so much rescuing for Katrina. Nice post, Mary Francis.
